Course Overview
This course is designed for individuals who require the knowledge and practical skills to safely use cable avoidance tools (CAT and Genny) to detect and avoid underground services during excavation and site work.
Course Objectives
Participants will develop competency in the following areas:
  • Understanding the legal and safety responsibilities when using cable avoidance tools
  • Identifying the main components and functions of cable avoidance equipment
  • Conducting pre-use checks, calibration, and routine maintenance in line with manufacturer and legislative requirements
  • Interpreting site plans, utility drawings, and other relevant documentation
  • Setting up and operating cable avoidance tools and signal generators correctly
  • Recognising the limitations and potential hazards of cable avoidance equipment
  • Applying effective techniques for detecting and tracing underground services
  • Implementing safe systems of work to minimise the risk of cable strikes
  • Using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring correct fit and maintenance
  • Carrying out post-use inspections and proper storage of equipment
Entry Requirements
  • For candidates applying for the NPORS CSCS Card, or those who require the ‘HS&E TESTED’ logo on their card, a valid CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test pass (within the last 2 years) is required.
  • Learners must have a good understanding of spoken and written English.
